Edinson Cavani has told friends he is keen to join Manchester United this summer, according to The Mirror.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, more than most players, and in recent weeks The Telegraph and The Guardian have both reported that we are interested in him despite his hefty €40 million+ price tag.
Now, The Mirror has reported he wants the move and isn’t put off by the fact that Manchester United are not in the Champions League next year.
From United’s current perspective, the mind boggles as to why we are even wasting our time looking at Cavani not only because he is a striker, the only department we have strength in, but as he commands such a high price tag.
It seems to me there is only one logical reason why United would genuinely be after Cavani – the club may be preparing for Rooney or Van Persie’s departure.
Rooney has signed a new £300,000 a week deal and him leaving does seem unlikely but if Louis Van Gaal comes in, he could be forced back onto the periphery by Van Persie which is something that saw him throw his toys out of the pram last year.
As for Van Persie, he had a fruitless season and has been linked with a move away for a while now.
Regardless of what happens with Van Persie and Rooney, Cavani shouldn’t be the player who Manchester United are chasing tooth and nail this summer as there are far bigger problems elsewhere in the squad.
