Manchester United take a huge step towards signing Shaw thanks to Chelsea

Chelsea are closing in a deal for Atletico Madrid’s left-back Felipe Luis in a £17 million move to bring him to Stamford Bridge, according to The Telegraph.

From Manchester United’s perspective, it’s the perfect news as Chelsea were seen as the main competitors for Luke Shaw and if they are going to bring Luis in, who had a very good game against them this week in the Champions League, then their interest in Shaw is likely to fizzle out.

The Telegraph’s Jason Burt was the first journalist who broke Juan Mata‘s £37 million move to Manchester United so he certainly has strong sources at Chelsea and his credibility is right up there with the best.

It’s a typical move from Chelsea when you think about it – ignore the young, promising player and buy the already established one. It’s a model that has helped them win trophies and it looks set to continue.

All of this plays into Manchester United’s hands nicely and just like David de Gea was my first choice replacement for Edwin van der Sar, I don’t think there is anyone better suited to replace Patrice Evra than Shaw.

What could very well happen next year is Evra stays on for another season and mentors Shaw before eventually passing the baton the following year. At just 18, Shaw could become our left-back for a decade if the move happened.

Southampton are denying that any approach has been made for Shaw but even if that were true, if United came in with a £30 million offer for Shaw, would they reject the offer or sell him just like they did previously with the likes of Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?
