Dortmund CEO indicates Kagawa return only makes sense if Reus is sold

Shinji Kagawa and Borussia Dortmund is a story that remains unfinished and Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney believes his return to Dortmund is a case of when rather than if.

However, the way Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is speaking, it doesn’t sound like the club have any intention of trying to lure him back to Germany this summer.

Watzke doesn’t feel a No. 10 like Kagawa is the type of player they need to sign with Marco Reus and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the squad already, indicating that only a sale of either player would make Kagawa’s return plausible.

“We have worked with Marco Reus a as a number ten, which everyone is talking about,” he said.

“And we have with Henrikh Mkhitaryan yet one who can also play great there. Would then a third number ten make sense?”

Dortmund’s statement certainly suggests that they won’t attempt to sign Kagawa this year but it would be naive to take their words at face value.

Two days before a deal to re-sign Nuri Sahin from Real Madrid was announced, the club labelled rumours he was going to return as ‘nonsense and baloney’, so they may well be doing something behind the scenes.
