Giggs rules out United duo but confirms World Cup boost for both

Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones will not be fit for Manchester United’s trip to Southampton this weekend but Ryan Giggs believes both will be available for England at the World Cup.

Rooney has been sidelined with a groin injury for the last few games while Jones was injured after throwing himself into a challenge against Hull and it was feared his shoulder injury may have ruled him out of contention for Brazil.

However, both players should be fit in time for Roy Hodgson to include them in England’s squad.

“Phil’s injury is not as bad as I thought it was on the night,” Giggs said.

“He won’t be available for Sunday against Southampton, but should be okay for the World Cup.

“Wayne has just started training over the last couple of days, and Sunday is probably a little bit too quick for him, but he is training and will also be fine for the World Cup.”

The problem for Rooney isn’t whether he is going to be fit for the World Cup because he’d be taken even if he was 50% fit. The problem is whether he will be have match sharpness. Rooney needs regular game time to be firing on all cylinders and always takes a few games to get back to full fitness.

As for Jones, he needs to curb his over enthusiasm for full blooded challenges because of how much he gets injured. If he wants to have a long career, he simply has to rein that in.
