Louis van Gaal has named Robin van Persie as Holland’s captain for the World Cup.
The 30-year-old spent a lot of time in Holland with Van Gaal during rehabilitation on his knee injury and was widely expected to be named captain, so the announcement comes as no surprise.
Van Persie is still Holland’s main man up front and he’ll be their attacking focal point at the World Cup this summer.
What this does show is Van Gaal’s close relationship with Van Persie and as Manchester United need a new captain next season following the departure of Nemanja Vidic, Van Persie’s name has to be high on that list given that Van Gaal is set to become manager.
Van Persie has experience of being captain for both Arsenal and Holland and in his first season with United, he did lead by example on the pitch. Right now, United certainly need some more leaders to emerge in the current squad.
