Juan Mata might be part of Spain’s provisional 30 man squad for the World Cup this summer but he has no guarantees of a spot in the final 23.
Spain have an embarrassment of riches including the likes of Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and David Silva as well as Mata, some players are going to have to be let down.
With that in mind, Mundo Deportivo held a fan poll to find out what 23 players they would take to the World Cup, and it doesn’t make particularly good reading for Mata.
Sergio Busquets 4% (4422) | Xabi Alonso 4% (3924) | Koke 4% (3977)
Iturraspe 1% (1062) | Xavi Hernandez 4% (4310) | Thiago Alcántara 3% (3450)
Mata 3% (2893) | Cazorla 3% (2640) | Iniesta 4% (4483)
Silva 4% (4447) | Pedro 4% (4245) | Jesus Navas 4% (3696) | Cesc Fàbregas 4% (3971)
Only uncapped Ander Iturraspe and Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla have less votes than Mata.
It’s clear the Spanish fans would rather stick to the midfielders they have watched domestically than the likes of Mata and Cazorla.
Of course, the final decision falls to Vicente Del Bosque and there could be a spot for Mata, which there should be, but Del Bosque may share the sentiment of the fans and go with those players he has been able to watch in the domestic season.
