Louis van Gaal might be at the centre of a tug of war for attention between Holland and Manchester United but in his press conference this afternoon, he was calmness personified.
After confirming Robin van Persie will be his captain, he said he hoped the striker would be able to complete 90 minutes on his road to recovery and cracked a joke with reporters about having insider knowledge about Van Persie’s progress from Old Trafford.
“I know what he did at Manchester. That is very easy nowadays of course,” he said before bursting out laughing.
“That was a joke, of course I thought it was a good joke.”
Van Persie is of course not fully match fit yet but hopes to complete the full game and work towards being fully fit for the World Cup.
For a man who must be under severe pressure from Holland to concentrate on the job at hand and United to sign a contract, Van Gaal looks to be the king of cool. That sort of self-confidence under pressure is indicative of his personality – not arrogant, just better.
