Manchester United’s €50m offer for world class midfielder is more like it

by Sam Peoples

Reports emerged earlier this week from Sports Mediaset suggested Fergie had presented a €32m offer to Antonio Conte for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Given that we paid £27.5m for Marouane Fellaini, it was a figure that seemed ever so slightly derisory.

Now, Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni from Tutto Mercato Web has reported the figure officially offered to Juventus was far closer to the €50 million mark, a number which is more suitable to a player of Vidal’s ilk, especially in the current market.

“In recent days, Ferguson was in Turin for the final of the Europa League and has officially asked for Arturo Vidal, proposing a figure of around €50m,” Bucchioni said.

“Juventus are tentative but it is better not to deprive yourself of Paul Pogba who is much younger and with room for improvement. Vidal is a great player but may have already peaked and could come back from the World Cup in less than optimal conditions.

“With the money of Vidal, the revenue from the Champions league title and the Serie A prize, Juventus could still implement a good enhancement to satisfy the needs of the Count, who basically has it right – if the Bianconeri want to try to do better in Europe, there is a need for new people.”

As we’ve intimated before, even €50m for Vidal would be great value for money.

He is just coming into his prime as a footballer, has been one of, if not the, best in his position in recent years and would be a coup if United landed him.

Ed Woodward’s obsession to land a marquee signing is clear in our pursuit of Edinson Cavani but if it is marquee he wants, he should be looking at someone like Vidal who is a player we genuinely need rather than another striker.
