PICTURE: Van Gaal’s new Manchester United XI including Hummels, Strootman and Muller

The writing had been on the wall for Louis van Gaal‘s appointment as Manchester United manager for a few weeks before it was confirmed but there is no such clarity as to what his first XI is going to be next season.

If you name a player, we’ve probably been linked with a move for him and it makes predicting our team very difficult but Dutch website NOS.nl have given it a go, and there are plenty of new faces in the side – five in total.

There are no surprises to see Luke Shaw in at left-back as the 18-year-old has already been the subject of two bids from United but the inclusion of Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat is a new name on the block. Janmaat enjoyed a strong season in the Eredivisie with two goals and five assists from right-back, strong enough for NOS.nl to think Van Gaal would consider signing him.

In at centre-back is Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund who has been linked on and off with a move to United for a while. Van Gaal is a known admirer of the Bundesliga so his signing would tick that box.

In central midfield, there are a host of names that could have been chosen but Kevin Strootman has been given the nod, despite his current injury problems.

The last addition is Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller, a player who was given his chance in the first team by none other than Van Gaal. Could they be re-united this summer?
