Kevin Strootman’s agent Chiel Dekker knows that his client is of interest to Louis van Gaal but insisted there have been no talks with Manchester United so far.
The Guardian are reporting Strootman is a target for Van Gaal in January rather than the summer due to his ongoing injury problems and that the midfielder would be interested in making a move, but it would all depend on Roma’s willingness to sell.
Strootman was one of Europe’s best midfielders last season before he suffered a serious injury that ruled him out of the World Cup and Van Gaal’s admiration for him went as far as changing Holland’s formation completely in his absence.
“He won’t be back playing until autumn – that’s the time schedule at the moment,” Dekker said.
“He is of interest to Louis van Gaal but not related to Manchester United at this point.”
Dekker made it clear he was aware of Van Gaal’s interest but left the ball firmly in Roma’s court with regards to any potential transfer.
He added: “[Van Gaal] Could be [interested in the future]. But he’s in Rome and he had a terrific season. There has been nothing between the clubs or between Louis and Kevin – they know each other and like each other but at this stage its not related to Man United.
“Roma do not want to sell. The first thing is its all between [the] clubs. And its also a very difficult decision because he has to choose between a fantastic club in Rome, a club that bought him and supported him while he was injured and [then] you have his personal coach of the national team at United.
“The clubs have to decide. He’s very happy at Rome, he’s happy to stay because they play Champions League next season, and happy to recover his injury, so at this stage we are not part of any discussion.”
No matter how much Van Gaal admires Strootman, it was always improbable he would have made a move for him this summer given that he would not be able to pass a medical, so a January move is far more likely.
However, it’s all good and well United lining up a move for Strootman in January but the here and now is that we need midfielders in the summer.
With a move for Toni Kroos ruled out, reports suggesting Cesc Fabregas isn’t wanted by Van Gaal and no further advancement in any pursuit of William Carvalho, United don’t look any closer to signing a central midfielder.
