Manchester United line up Luke Shaw alternative from Spain – reports

Spanish newspaper AS has claimed that doubts have developed over the Luke Shaw deal, prompting Manchester United to look at the potential purchase of Barcelona full back Jordi Alba.

AS state that negotiations for Southampton’s 18-year-old left back have become ‘almost impossible’, forcing United to explore other options and say, probably correctly, that any deal for Alba would be incredibly difficult to pull off due to the high regard in which Luis Enrique holds the Spanish defender.

Alba, 25, was a target for United before he initially joined Barcelona for a fee of around €14m in the summer of 2012. United’s pursuit of the Spaniard was no secret two years ago with Sir Alex Ferguson seemingly viewing Alba as the successor to Patrice Evra and the Sunday Express has picked up on these latest reports.

United may well have been in for Alba back in 2012 but it is highly unlikely we are pursuing him this summer.

By all accounts, Shaw’s move to United now looks like a case of when not if thanks to plenty of journalists putting their neck on the line but even if it were to fall through, pursuing Alba would be akin to Cesc Fabregas last year and we’d be left empty handed.
