Danny Welbeck limped out of England training yesterday and it has put his participation in the Italy game this weekend in doubt.
Every major British newspaper including The Guardian has reported the news and although nothing is yet confirmed, it would be a bitter blow for both Welbeck and Hodgson if he were ruled out of the tie.
Welbeck has been one of Hodgson’s go-to-guys having scored eight in 20 appearances for England and out in the testing conditions of Manaus, his pace and relentless energy were two aspects that would have given England a real advantage.
In his absence, Raheem Sterling would likely start but against the tiring legs of Italy in humid conditions, he would have been much better as an impact sub.
There is likely to be official confirmation of Welbeck’s fitness within the next 24 hours, so we will bring you an update as soon as it happens.
