Antoine Griezmann gives Manchester United a reason to be excited

France kicked off their World Cup campaign in convincing style with a 3-0 win over Honduras on Sunday evening. Karim Benzema starred for the French with two goals, whilst Mathieu Valbuena was instrumental for the victors.

Patrice Evra, despite a brief injury scare, provided an attacking threat down the left hand side and delivered numerous dangerous crosses into the Honduran box. The one-sided nature of the match meant that Evra’s defensive frailties were not exposed and he was able to impress with his well-known offensive ability.

Paul Pogba also impressed in the first half with his composure in possession and his ability to effortlessly dictate the tempo. His class was partly marred by a hot-headed lash out at Wilson Palacios, but the youngster’s talent is undeniable.

From a United point of view, the performance of Antoine Griezmann was exciting. He played just behind Benzema and was a very influential figure for France. His clever movement and ability to play anywhere in the final third meant that he was nigh on impossible for the Honduran defence to pick up.

Griezmann displayed tidy footwork and vision on many occasions, including a neat through ball to Blaise Matuidi and excellent cross-field bass to Valbuena in the first-half. He was also a lick of paint away from getting on the score sheet when he rose highest but saw his header come back off the bar,

His second half display was slightly more quiet but a neat flick round the corner to play in Mathieu Debuchy and a superb cross for Karim Benzema certainly caught the eye.

United desperately need to revamp their wide options following consecutive poor seasons for Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, and Luis Nani, and Griezmann is an option who many think is the perfect player for Louis van Gaal to sign.
