Mats Hummels believes he could one day play for Manchester United but said he didn’t expect to join the club this summer.
The 24-year-old was in imperious form yesterday in Germany’s 4-0 win over Portugal until he was forced off with an injury and with Louis van Gaal looking to reinforce the defence, Hummels is considered one of the best centre backs who could be available.
However, Hummels insisted he had never thought about a move to United because he was focussed on his current situation but left the door firmly open for a move.
When asked about a potential move to United, Hummels said: “I never think about that or talk about it because it is something that isn’t important for me right now. Maybe it will be some day, but I don’t expect it to be like that this summer.”
Although Hummels has said he didn’t expect to leave Borussia Dortmund this year, his comments suggest he would be open to the move if both clubs could agree. It was hardly a definitive ‘no’ to any potential move.
This week, United have been linked with Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen but if there is even the slightest chance that Hummels is available, then Louis van Gaal should go all out to try and sign Hummels instead.
