PICTURE: Manchester United offer £34m to secure Premier League star

Manchester United are ready to offer Southampton £34m for Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Mirror.

Shaw, 18, was subject to a bid from United in January as well as two bids so far this summer, all of which have been rejected, and it would not be a surprise if United were willing to pay that much in order to secure him.

After so many failures, the last thing Ed Woodward would want to do is lose out on our first-choice left-back over a few million pounds. You get the feeling he would be swiftly replaced if that happened.

Whatever the fee is, United just need to pay it. £27m was a lot for an 18-year-old, £30m was a staggering figure, £34m? Outrageous, but it is the club’s money and it should be spent buying the right players. It’s better the money is spent on players rather than lining the Glazers’ pockets.

If we’re looking back at the start of the 2024/25 season after a decade of Shaw as our right-back, £34m would be a dip in the ocean for Shaw and that must be why United are willing to pay so much for him.

Shaw will start for England tomorrow night against Costa Rica in the dead rubber third group stage game and although the result means nothing, it will be interesting to see how Shaw plays on the biggest stage.
