Manchester United know precisely how to sign Arturo Vidal this summer

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s well documented pursuit of Arturo Vidal has continued to gather in pace over the last few days thanks to reports that talks had been opened with Juventus to preliminarily discuss a deal.

Yesterday, word from the Juventus camp made it clear they had no intention of selling Vidal this summer and it comes as no surprise to hear that given how important he has been for them domestically, on top of his rising stock thanks to the World Cup.

However, from United’s perspective, it changes very little. Juventus were never going to willingly let one of their best players leave without a fight and it leaves United in exactly the same situation, which is a very simple one.

No matter how vocal a club can be that a player is not for sale, everyone has a price. Vidal is no different. Juventus may be in no rush to sell the Chilean midfielder but in modern football, money is a language everybody speaks.

United now have the ball firmly in their court with Vidal and it all boils down to how much we’d be willing to spend on signing him. Is he worth £50m? Without a shadow of a doubt. Would Juventus be able to reject a bid of that size? They’re the waters that United need to test.

Time is on our hands this summer with nearly two months left in the transfer window and Ed Woodward has shown he has improved on the negotiations front having completed the signing of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw.

The question is simply whether United see value in signing 27-year-old Vidal for what will no doubt be a club record fee. As far as a marquee signing goes, the best box-to-box midfielder in world football right now is one of the biggest coups we could get, especially after his World Cup performances, and he represents the perfect marriage of marquee and necessity for what United really need in midfield.

All that remains to be seen is if United are willing to stump up the cash for Vidal.
