Manchester United confirm Ekangamene departure to Zulte Waregen

Charni Ekangamene has left Manchester United and joined Belgian side Zulte Waregem on a four year deal, the club has confirmed.

The versatile 20-year-old, who spent part of last season on loan with League One side Carlisle United, was offered a contract by United at the end of the season but decided not to take it up and move on.

“I joined United at 16 and have learned a lot in the youth system,” he told the club’s official website. “Firstly with the Under-18s and then the Reserves.

“I trained alongside Marnick Vermijl, Ritchie De Laet, Adnan Januzaj and even Marouane Fellaini and it’s been a learning experience for me. Now is the time for the next step.”

Ekangamene was a regular in United’s Under-21 side last year and the team that won the league the previous season. His form and consistency saw him nominated for Reserve Player of the Year, losing out to Saidy Janko.

While this move will come as a surprise to many, it is probably best for Ekangamene’s development. It is unlikely that he would have reached the levels required for United’s first team and there are other young midfield prospects such as Ben Pearson, Joe Rothwell, Sean Goss and Matthew Willock.
