Van Persie could play vital role in any move for Vermaelen

Following fruitful World Cup campaigns, Manchester United forward Robin van Persie has been spotted on holiday with Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, adding fuel to the fire over a potential summer move to Old Trafford for the 28-year-old defender.

Despite rumours circulating in Italy suggesting Arsenal captain Vermaelen could now pick Naples over Manchester, the Belgian international has been photographed on holiday with former team mate and good friend, Van Persie.

Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws showed Van Persie and Vermaelen with their families on a holiday in Barbados, a place which would provide the perfect opportunity for Van Persie to tell the Arsenal captain all about United.

Vermaelen and Van Persie played together at Arsenal until the Dutch striker joined Manchester United in 2012 and constant reports from the British press claim Vermaelen will soon follow in the footsteps of his friend by leaving the Emirates for Old Trafford.

Whilst these photos do not confirm anything in the way of a move to United for the Belgian defender, it does offer an insight into the closeness between the two players; and with Van Persie said the be the favourite to take over as captain of the club, he could be convincing Vermaelen that a move to Manchester is the correct thing to do.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be open to letting Vermaelen depart and favours a swap deal for England international Chris Smalling.
