Manchester United have a real necessity for a new centre-back this summer following the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
A whole host of players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford but speaking at the Rose Bowl last night during United’s open training session, Andy Mitten narrowed it down to say there were four names on the list who United were keeping a close eye on: Mats Hummels, Daley Blind, Stefan de Vrij and Thomas Vermaelen.
Both James Ducker and Mark Ogden reiterated the same list of defenders so there are clearly some messages being sent out by those close to the club.
Hummels is the dream target but Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp and even Hummels’ father have made their stance clear that Hummels is going nowhere.
As for Daley Blind and Stefan de Vrij, their performances at the World Cup epitomised Louis van Gaal‘s ethos that any player can thrive when given the opportunity to and both would be strong additions to the squad, particularly Blind given his versatility.
Vermaelen is also on the list and at 28, he is the most experienced of the four so it depends on whether Van Gaal feels Vermaelen’s experience in the Premier League makes him an attractive prospect, because his injury record suggests it would be a risk.
Van Gaal might be insistent that no new signings will happen just yet but by all accounts, the wheels are in motion behind the scenes with regards to United eyeing up potential targets.
