Rooney: I want to start against LA Galaxy

Wayne Rooney is ready and raring to go for Manchester United’s first pre-season game against LA Galaxy after enjoying his first few training sessions under the guidance of Louis van Gaal.

The 28-year-old only joined the squad on Friday after a short break following England’s early World Cup exit, but has already been impressed with van Gaal’s methods.

With Robin van Persie absent from the tour after his international duties with the Netherlands this summer, Rooney will have the perfect opportunity to prove himself to his new manager after a difficult World Cup and a disappointing season last year.

“It’s been good meeting the manager and the new coaching staff. The first couple of training sessions have been good and everyone is looking forward to getting the games under way,” Rooney said.

“We’ve got a new manager with different ideas – we have to train well and listen to what he wants us to do and take that onto the pitch and show him what we can do.”

Assistant manager Ryan Giggs has been impressed with all of those that have returned from World Cup duty so far and revealed that Rooney in particular is keen to get back on the pitch.

“Everyone will be involved in the first game. Wayne really wants to start,” said Giggs.

“The World Cup boys are a bit behind in terms of their fitness, with the other lads who have been back 10 days or so, but Wayne looks good along with the rest of the lads. Actually all of the World Cup lads have come back looking really sharp.”

Rooney may well captain the side if he starts against LA Galaxy with van Gaal yet to decide on a new club captain after the departures of Nemanja Vidic and vice-captain Patrice Evra.
