Manchester United’s Rafael ruled out of AS Roma clash with groin injury

Louis van Gaal has revealed Rafael will not feature against AS Roma because of a groin injury but said the club would have to wait and see to find out how serious the injury was.

Rafael picked up the injury during Friday night’s training session and has been unable to recover in time for tonight’s game against AS Roma.

Given that the prerogative of a pre-season tour is to re-gain match fitness, it’s a blow for Rafael as he spent so much of last season on the sidelines.

“We’ll have to wait and see [on his injury] but we know he cannot play [on Saturday],” Van Gaal said.

Rafael’s absence could see Chris Smalling fill in at right-back but there is also the possibility that Reece James will be rewarded with a start after his fantastic performance from the bench against LA Galaxy.

Tonight’s game against Roma will kick-off at 9.06pm and will be live on MUTV.
