Warren Joyce’s men will travel to Oakwell tonight for a pre-season friendly against Barnsley, a side relegated from the Championship at the end of the last campaign.
Although The Tykes were relegated last season, Joyce believes the side will pose a good challenge for the reserve squad, which is just what they need after a somewhat unconvincing run of results.
After the disappointing 1-0 loss to Bray Wanderers and a goalless stalemate against Southport, the young United squad racked up a very impressive 5-0 win against Altrincham, with David Petrucci singled out as the top performer, scoring a brace that included a powerful long-range drive.
Joyce has enjoyed being able to rotate his reserves side for the afore mentioned friendlies and has emphasised that fitness is key for those hoping to make an impact.
Angelo Henriquez is a doubt after being substituted off in the previous fixture with an injury whereas players such as Petrucci and Wilson will hope to be included in the starting XI after impressing at the J. Davidson Stadium last time out. One player who will not be included in the squad is Bebe who sealed his transfer to Benfica last week.
With Davide Petrucci bagging a brace in the last outing, he’ll be going into this game hoping to repeat what was a stand out performance. After 2 assists in the 5-0 drubbing of Altrincham, Andreas Pereira will be going into this game brimming with confidence, and is one to look out for for both in this game and indeed the future.
The convincing 5-0 win in the last outing has been the first win of the pre-season for the lads, and will no doubt have given them confidence going into this game.
