Louis van Gaal has revealed Wilfried Zaha will make his eagerly anticipated bow on the US Tour with a second half appearance against Inter Milan.
Zaha is the only player in the tour squad who is yet to get any minutes and after questions started to be asked about the 21-year-old, Van Gaal insisted he was doing everything asked of him in training.
Now, whether as a reaction to the murmurings or because he felt Zaha was ready, he’ll get his opportunity against Inter Milan but will have to do in an unorthodox striking role.
“When he plays in this system he must be a striker or otherwise he cannot play,” Van Gaal told reporters at his press conference.
The boss also revealed Luke Shaw is not currently fully fit and has been placed on a separate training programme.
Van Gaal said: “He needs to be fit and is not fit so he can’t perform what I want.”
Chris Smalling will play the full 90 minutes as will two other unnamed players and it sounds like the defender will be given the captain’s armband.
Van Gaal also confirmed Rafael was back in Manchester and had started his treatment on a groin injury that forced him home early from the tour.
