Louis van Gaal praised the performance of Manchester United’s defence against Inter Milan after keeping a clean sheet over 90 minutes but admitted the club was very much in the market for defenders this summer.
The Dutchman likes what he has seen so far of Tyler Blackett and Michael Keane on tour but it is clear he doesn’t feel the two youngsters are capable of filling the large gap left behind by Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
“We have conceded zero goals and then one wonder goal and a penalty,” Van Gaal said after the game.
“We are doing well but we are looking for defenders. Defenders have gone and we have to replace them. But I like [Tyler] Blackett and [Michael] Keane.”
It’s good to hear Van Gaal has every intention of bringing in at least one defender in the summer because our three first-team centre backs are all injury prone, so we’d need to invest.
Whether Van Gaal is referring to Hummels, Mangala or anybody else remains unknown but for the time being, there is comfort knowing United are in the market for a defender.
