Manchester United and Barcelona have both been heavily linked with Thomas Vermaelen this summer and Sky Sports are now reporting the Spanish side have made a £10m bid for him.
Vermaelen, 28, is on his way out of Arsenal for the right price after after becoming third choice at the London club and with United in the market for a new centre back this year, the experienced Belgian is considered a defensive target for Louis van Gaal.
Having been forced out of the first team, Vermaelen will be keen to find a new club and re-establish himself as a first choice centre-back, something he’d get the chance to do at United.
Elsewhere, Gianluca Di Marzio suggests Barcelona have had a bid rejected for PSG defender Marquinhos and it would be no surprise to see them bring in a new centre-back following the retirement of Carles Puyol from an already weak defence.
United are in need of a new centre-back but there are better options available than Vermaelen. At 28, he would bring experience to United but there’s every risk he could spend more time on the sidelines than on the pitch and United could not afford to sign another injury prone centre-back.
Also, the break-through of Tyler Blackett on tour would have given Van Gaal food for thought as to who else could be ready from the academy and he’d have to look no further than Under-21s captain Tom Thorpe who could deserves a shot with the first-team.
Vermaelen could well improve United’s current options at centre back but United need to be aiming for the top defenders in the world if we are to bring in a new centre-back, not an Arsenal throwaway.
