Manchester United have officially submitted a bid for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen and Arsene Wenger has once again suggested he could leave the club.
Vermaelen, 28, has been heavily linked with a move to United in the past few weeks and the interest is genuine as Wenger confirmed an official bid this afternoon to reporters.
The Telegraph have today reported that Barcelona have offered Arsenal £10m for Vermaelen and now Wenger has revealed United’s bid, Arsenal are in a strong position to negotiate the best possible price for their former captain.
“Vermaelen could leave us because he needs to play now. We’re in a position where it’s difficult to stand in his way,” Wenger told reporters this afternoon.
United are clearly confident Vermaelen can fully recover from his injuries but there are genuine concerns he could become just another injury prone centre-back at Old Trafford.
Wenger also made it clear he felt United were title contenders once again this year: “Certainly Man United come back into it. There will be six teams fighting for the league this year.”
