Van Gaal confirms injuries to Valencia, Shaw and Welbeck

Louis van Gaal has said Manchester United are struggling with injuries but still expects a bright start to the new Premier League season.

Danny Welbeck, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Rafael and Michael Carrick are all sidelined ahead of United’s first game of the new campaign on Saturday against Swansea.

Despite that, Van Gaal is determined see things positively, saying it presented an opportunity for United’s young players to impress.

“We have a lot of injuries now,” van Gaal told MUTV after United’s 2-1 victory over Valencia. “Don’t forget Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia were injured. These are three defenders.

“We have to wait and see if they can play Saturday. The main is that we have won, despite playing our worst game.

“I had a lot of young players. They did reasonably well but they could do better, I believe. But it’s a start.”

It has almost become tradition for United to have a substantial injury list but the fact that so many players are injured before the season has even started is a real worry.

United’s injury list now means it is absolutely critical for new names to be brought in. Reports today indicate that United are still close to moves for Daley Blind, Marcus Rojo and Angel Di Maria but there has been a severe lack of movement in recent weeks, meaning United need to move fast in the last few weeks of this transfer window to strengthen the squad sufficiently.
