Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Valencia – Dominant Jones inspires victory

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea 6.5 – Very quiet night for the Spaniard as Valencia offered so little going forward.

Tyler Blackett– Yet again an impressive performance. Few followers of the youth team would have been expected this level of consistency from Blackett.

Phil JonesMAN OF THE MATCH – A long stint in his favoured centre-back role is doing wonders for Jones.

Chris Smalling 6.5 – Decent performance but outshone by his playing partners.

Ashley Young 7 – Still looking very decent this year. Strong in attack and did his defensive duties too.

Reece James 6.5 – Not as bold as he was earlier in the tour but still new to the team.

Darren Fletcher 7.5 – Cometh the hour, cometh the Fletcher. United needed his goal to begin the turnaround. Playing so well in pre-season.

Ander Herrera 7.5 – Some notably excellent passes were made in the game but his off the ball tempo and relentlessness could be his most redeeming feature.

Juan Mata 7.5 – Found the space and was always an outlet. Not his most sparkling performance but still influential.

Wayne Rooney– Commitment was there but missed his penalty. Not a bad performance but could have done more.

Javier Hernandez 6 – Invisible performance from Chicharito. Did himself no favours.

Shinji Kagawa 6 – Assured after coming on. Will need to make an impact quick when given the chance.

Adnan Januzaj 7 – Looked great after coming on to play in the No.10 role. He belongs in the first XI.

Michael Keane 6 – Average from Keane but he’ll be working his confidence up.

Marouane Fellaini– Greeted by boos and cheers, Fellaini responded by scoring the winner. Can Fellaini score? They always score…

Tom Cleverley 6 – Poor performance from Cleverley and one he’d likely want to forget.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Didn’t have too much of an impact in comparison to how he has played earlier on this pre-season tour.
