Insight into Manchester United’s chances of signing Arturo Vidal and Angel di Maria

by Sam Peoples

Marcos Rojo has the potential to be a top signing for Manchester United if Louis van Gaal can get the best out of him but United fans are all too aware the Argentinian isn’t enough to make United title contenders.

With that in mind, the two names who are likely to be most heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the next two weeks are Arturo Vidal and Angel di Maria.

Speaking on MUTV, the latest from Andy Mitten on Vidal is in line with what he has previously said that Vidal wants to move and Juventus are willing to sell. In contrast, The Mirror’s David McDonnell says United are not interested, a line followed by ESPN’s Miguel Delaney.

With Vidal, the varying stories have caused confusion all summer. In this case, while Delaney and McDonnell are reporting United’s official stance with the press, Mitten is sticking with his trusted sources in Italy. Who you choose to believe is up to you but there is an understanding that for the right money, Juventus will cash in on Vidal. Whether his knee could thwart any potential move remains to be seen.

As for Di Maria, it all far more straight-forward.

Madrid are happy to sell the winger to fund their heavy summer spending on James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, much like they did last season with Mesut Ozil for Gareth Bale.

The only question is whether United will be able to meet Madrid’s valuation. As Paris St Germain pulled out of a move for the Argentinian, it suggests the fee is substantial and £50m is a figure that has been placed on him by the press.

Either Vidal or Di Maria would be a huge coup for United and transform the feeling around the club. Vidal is the better player for what United crucially need in a midfielder who can boss a game but equally so, Di Maria is an individual who can change a game in an instant.

Securing Rojo so quickly after the Swansea defeat could be the start of a huge two weeks for United if other transfer targets are pulled off.
