Angel di Maria is expected to be given Manchester United’s fabled No.7 shirt when he joins the club, according to Guillem Balague.
Eric Cantona, George Best, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bryan Robson et al. The No.7 shirt has been donned by some of United’s most famous players over the years and following the occupancies of Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia, United fans are keen to see the mantle of No.7 taken on by somebody deserving – step forward Di Maria.
There’s one characteristic which Di Maria and the No.7 shirt share in abundance – excitement. In years gone by, United’s No.7 has been worn by a player who United could turn to for a moment of magic to change a game and Di Maria has the ability to do precisely that.
At a reported £63m, Di Maria will come with a massive air of expectation on his shoulders but having played in the pressure boiler that is Real Madrid for years, he’ll be more than accustomed to performing with eyes burning into the back of his head.
When Cristiano Ronaldo joined United, Sir Alex Ferguson immediately gave him the No.7 shirt as he felt confident he could do the shirt proud and if reports are correct, Di Maria could be entrusted with the same responsibility.
