Predicted XI: Burnley vs Manchester United – Di Maria and Rojo start

by Tom Newbold

David de Gea – An obvious selection.

Phil Jones – The continued absence of Chris Smalling means Jones will slot in at right centre-back.

Jonny Evans – Despite a torrid time against MK Dons, the Northern Irishman will have gained some match fitness ready for Saturday’s early kick-off.

Marcus Rojo – It could be a debut for one of United’s new Argentinians, so long as his registration is completed in time.

Antonio Valencia – Valencia is the most likely candidate to play at right wing-back.

Darren Fletcher – Rested in midweek, the experienced Fletcher will be called upon again on Saturday.

Angel Di Maria – With Ander Herrera still injured and Tom Cleverley not favoured by Louis van Gaal, United’s new record transfer could start in an unorthodox central midfield position against Burnley.

Ashley Young – Young is set to continue at left wing-back despite looking mostly uncomfortable there.

Juan Mata – Last weekend’s goalscorer will be looking to influence games more from his central attacking position.

Robin van Persie – The Dutch striker will be looking to find his top form under his new Dutch manager.

Wayne Rooney – United’s captain will partner Van Persie up front.

Formation: 3-4-1-2

The signing of Di Maria, plus the availability of Danny Welbeck and Adnan Januzaj from the bench, gives Van Gaal some decent options to work with on Saturday. These options means United may well switch to a 4-3-3 formation at some stage if not from the start.

It is however imperative that United’s defenders gel and that Rooney and Van Persie penetrate up front in order to get a result against Burnley.
