Florentino Perez explains why Real Madrid sold Angel di Maria to Manchester United

Florentino Perez has explained why Real Madrid couldn’t hold on to one of their star men in Angel Di Maria and why the Argentine ended up joining Manchester United.

Di Maria joined the club two weeks ago in a British record deal of around £59.7m and the decision to let Di Maria go wasn’t popular among players and fans alike.

However, it was unavoidable as Madrid were unable to meet the wage demands of Di Maria which Perez says would have made him the second highest earner at the club behind Ronaldo.

“We made the best offer that we could to Di Maria and he didn’t accept it,” Perez said.

“Hence, we brought in James (Rodriguez), one of the best players at the World Cup and the Golden Boot award winner.”

Should Madrid have sold two key parts of their successful Champions League winning team in Di Maria and Xabi Alonso to accommodate someone off the back of a World Cup?

For a team that has spent huge money on the likes of Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, it seems odd they couldn’t match Di Maria’s demands.

Perez added: “Di Maria had financial requests that I considered legitimate but we couldn’t satisfy them.

“I reiterate that we made him the best possible offer.

“With the exception of Cristiano (Ronaldo), Di Maria would have been the highest paid at Real Madrid.”

The deal speaks volumes for the current financial strength of Manchester United that they could offer Di Maria what he wanted despite the lack of Champions League football that the current champions of Europe could offer.

Those who wishfully believed United were unable to financially compete with the world’s biggest clubs have been shown that the money is there if needed.
