Sir Alex Ferguson: Manchester United’s spending is amazing

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken for the first time about the club spending around £150m on six new signings during the summer transfer window, hailing it as an ‘amazing’ amount of money to spend.

The club have never had a bigger outlay during one summer and altogether there were six new faces through the door whilst an unprecedented 17 left, whether it be permanently or on loan.

Sir Alex was always a staunchly against rising transfer fees and believed it was very difficult to find value in the market, and it is something he feels is only likely to get worse.

Speaking at the UEFA Elite Coaches seminar this week, Ferguson said: “Certainly it’s amazing, the amount of money spent nowadays.

“My personal opinion is that it’s never going to change, the world is progressing, and transfer fees with it, and I don’t know if there will be an end to it.

“Fortunately, I’m not at the hub of it nowadays.”

Ferguson’s comments seemed to suggest he was happy to be out of the game where agents and money now rule, particularly with super agent Jorge Mendes at the hub of a couple of United’s biggest deals in the last weeks of the window.

In his final years at the club, Ferguson appeared reluctant to match the extravagant fees and wages being paid by rivals Chelsea and Manchester City which saw United miss out on several targets.

That has certainly not been the case this year under Louis van Gaal and United have once again become competitive in the market for the world’s best players.
