Frank de Boer says Daley Blind prefers a central midfield role at Manchester United

Ajax boss Frank de Boer believes Daley Blind wants to play in a central midfield role at Manchester United and feels he has the right qualities to succeed.

Blind started out his career as a full-back at Ajax and was used in that role by Louis van Gaal during the World Cup but playing as defensive midfielder is a position he has excelled in previously.

United certainly need a new defensive midfielder with Darren Fletcher unable to fill the gap left by Michael Carrick‘s injury and De Boer is confident Blind will do just that.

“He’s been playing for Ajax since he was 10 years old, and now he can hopefully show his qualities at United,” De Boer said.

“He started as a full-back but I think now he prefers to be a controlling midfielder. I think he’ll have two or three options [at United] – either at wing-back or on the left in a central midfield pairing.

“He’ll have to get used to the rhythm of the league first, but he’s a really quick thinker and nowadays that’s very important.”

Blind could end up being United’s most important purchase this summer. He may not be a spectacular signing like Falcao or Di Maria but he will hopefully fulfil a role in the team that has been missing so for long.

For United’s attack to excel this season, it will need a central midfielder who is able to protect the defence, win the ball back and start attacks in the first place – that is what Blind can do.

The Dutchman is in line to make his debut on Sunday and his potential partnership with Ander Herrera could be one of the most crucial ones for United this season.
