Januzaj: I feel privileged to have Giggs’ No.11 shirt

by Sam Peoples

There are certain similarities between a young Adnan Januzaj and the young Ryan Giggs that broke into the Manchester United team 25 years ago.

The Belgian may now possess Giggs’ raw pace but his agility, skill, close control and the new No.11 on his back almost make him the perfect replacement for the Manchester United legend.

Januzaj himself is very keen to follow in the footsteps of Giggs and is honoured to have been given his shirt number on a permanent basis.

“I feel privileged,” he told Squawka.

“I used to watch him [Giggs]. I learnt a lot of things from him…there are so many things that, really, I could not make a list!”

Januzaj made quite an impact on everybody at Old Trafford during his breakthrough season at the club, impressing on his league debut against Crystal Palace before scoring a brace in his first start at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland.

He continued to do well when played on either wing and was a continuous bright spark during a torrid campaign under former boss David Moyes but his insistence that his preferred position is at No.10 at least gives Louis van Gaal options with the Belgian, a trait he admires in his players.

“That’s my preferred position but I’m happy to play anywhere for the manager.” Januzaj said.

Given the competition for places in the given position and the remarkable lack of quality provided by the current wingers, it may be more sensible for Januzaj to concentrate on emulating the man who wore the same number he now graces when he steps on to the Old Trafford turf.

Capable of going past players with ease due to a mixture of skill, balance and agility, Januzaj has all the qualities to make it as a successful winger at the club.
