Michael Carrick has returned to first-team training following surgery on his ankle.
Louis van Gaal was frustrated to lose one of his most experienced players back in July when Carrick was ruled out for 10-12 weeks but he’ll be happy to have him back in training.
The 33-year-old has been sorely missed in United’s midfield as with Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini ruled out, Darren Fletcher has had to marshal the midfield almost on his own and hasn’t been able to keep up with the pace of the Premier League.
It’s unlikely that Carrick took part in full training with the first-team but simply to have him out on the training pitch instead of working on his own in the gym is a step in the right direction

Herrera took part in a behind closed doors friendly against Bury this week and was also part of training today, so he is closing on his return.
