Man Utd potential formation: True 4-3-3 – No Van Persie or Mata

by Sam Peoples

Our look at possible formations Manchester United could use this season continues tonight with a ‘true’ 4-3-3.

The reason we’re calling this a ‘true’ 4-3-3 is that it is one which really focuses on how Louis van Gaal has used them in the past.

With a single holding midfielder in Daley Blind, this formation is one which places a real emphasis on counter-attacking with pace.

Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera as a central midfield pairing would bring fantastic energy to the middle for United but it is with Adnan Januzaj and Antonio Valencia where the attacks would be built through, leaving Radamel Falcao as the focal point up front to score.

Suggesting Valencia might not be popular but his lightning pace would give United the ability to spring into attack from one pass, much like Di Maria would be able to do if he spread to the other wing.

Add in the fact you would then have Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie as attacking options from the bench and you get to see how this sort of formation could really suit this squad.
