Manchester United’s midfield against Queens Park Rangers would have been the stuff of dreams for any fan 12 months ago and the dream became a reality as Louis van Gaal fielded arguably the strongest midfield four the club have possessed in several years.
Daley Blind made his United debut whilst Angel Di Maria made his home debut alongside Ander Herrera who was making just his second appearance for the club. In front of them was Juan Mata who is still a relatively new face to the Old Trafford crowd after joining from Chelsea in January.
It certainly made for some great football in comparison to recent games. Blind was fantastic in front of the defence, Herrera chipped in with a goal and an assist whilst man of the match Di Maria scored the opener before having a hand in the other three goals during an impressive afternoon for Louis van Gaal‘s men.
Over the past few years United fans have watched midfielders come and go. Tom Cleverley could never hold down a place, Michael Carrick has struggled with injuries whilst Darren Fletcher had a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Others such as Anderson haven’t had the talent to hold down a regular spot and at times fans have been left bemused by midfield combinations such as Rafael and Park Ji-Sung among others whilst the talented Paul Pogba sat on the bench.
Albeit against weak opposition, United’s new-look midfield was impressive and it will give any supporter the hope the club finally have a midfield capable of competing with the very best in the league.
