Arjen Robben is certain Manchester United will get straight back into the Champions League under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal.
The 30-year-old flourished after being brought to Bayern Munich by Van Gaal and was also Holland’s star performer at the World Cup, so he is well accustomed to success under Van Gaal.
Although Robben does believe it will take time for Van Gaal to really get United playing top class football again, he is convinced that time is a matter of when, not if.
“I haven’t spoken to him recently, but I was very happy for him that he won the game against QPR,” Robben said.
“Hopefully now he can show that he will do very well, but he needs time.
“I know how it works – if you are not winning, you get the pressure but the management at United know what sort of coach they have got and I am very confident he will be successful there.
“He will get United back into the Champions League next season, where they belong.
“They are such a big club and that is where they belong.”
Ed Woodward has told United’s investors that the club is budgeting for at least a third place finish this season and if that was to be the case, United would go straight back into the Champions League of course.
It’s certainly the main goal for this season and if United’s squad can have as much belief as Robben, then there’s every chance they can achieve it.
