Van Gaal believes Van Persie and Falcao can play alongside each other

Louis van Gaal believes Robin van Persie and new signing Radamel Falcao can play together and ‘won’t interfere’ with each other if they are paired together up front in the future.

The new Manchester United boss has trialled and tested several formations this season and the one common aspect of all of them is to play with two out and out strikers.

With Wayne Rooney‘s place in the team almost always guaranteed due to his new role as captain, the partnership of Van Persie and Falcao may be a rare one unless Rooney is moved back into the No.10 role.

However, such a situation appears unlikely due to Juan Mata‘s continued good run of goal scoring form but Van Gaal is confident Falcao and Van Persie can play in the same team together.

“I don’t think Falcao interferes with Van Persie or Van Persie interferes with Falcao. Both are good strikers,” Van Gaal said this afternoon.

“Then we have [Wayne] Rooney, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson. We have five players for the two striker positions.

“When we play 4-3-3 for example then Januzaj should have maybe more chances – it depends on the system we use.”

Falcao appeared for his Manchester United debut on Sunday in the 4-0 win against Queens Park Rangers and linked up with van Persie on several occasions but neither ended up with a goal to their names.

Van Persie has looked sluggish in all three of his performances for the reds this season and may find his place under threat from United’s latest South American recruit.

With Rooney’s place in the team almost guaranteed, Falcao’s goal scoring record and reputation as a world class striker may push the Netherlands striker out of the team come the Leicester City game this weekend.
