Van Gaal rejects Guardiola claims: “Every player I have contacted wants to play for Manchester United”

Louis van Gaal has hit back at claims from Pep Guardiola that Bayern Munich’s players rejected an opportunity to join Manchester United in the summer.

In the build-up to Bayern’s Champions League tie against Manchester City this week, Guardiola insisted United wouldn’t be able to afford any player from the German champions.

However, Van Gaal has refuted claims that any of his transfer targets rejected a move to United to either indicate he never contacted any Bayern player over a potential move or that Guardiola is wrong.

“Every player I have contacted wants to play for Manchester United,” Van Gaal said.

“In spite of the fact that we are not playing in the Champions League this season, the players are still willing to come. It is unbelievable but it is because of the greatness of this club.

“They all believe in the project we have started now but I will say again that it has only just started. It still needs time.”

Given that United broke the Premier League transfer record to sign one of the world’s best players as well as a host of others, Guardiola’s claims that United wouldn’t be able to afford Bayern’s players do seem rather strange.

The likes of Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger may well have rejected moves if they were presented but United would be able to meet their demands.

As for what Van Gaal said the players he’d been in contact with not rejecting United, it is precisely what David Moyes also said in January, not long before a deal for Juan Mata was finalised.

Regardless of how strong United’s title fighting chances are this season, their ability to compete as a global force in player spending has certainly returned.
