Sir Alex Ferguson might be a managerial extraordinaire but he did have a playing career that spanned nearly 20 years.
From Queens Park way back in 1957, Ferguson played for the likes of St. Johnstone, Dunfermline and Rangers before he eventually ended his playing career with Ayr United in 1974.
It was from there that Ferguson immediately went into manager with East Stirlingshire and 12 years later he became manager of Manchester United. The rest is history.
This great video shows Ferguson back with Ayr United in 1973 scoring an important late goal with a header and it’s fantastic to see early footage of the man who helped make United what it is today.
