Van Gaal praises Shaw and McNair after impressive Man United debuts against West Ham

Louis van Gaal was amazed by Luke Shaw‘s ability to complete the full 90 minutes against West Ham this weekend.

Shaw was one of two débutantes alongside Paddy McNair and Van Gaal was extremely pleased with both of their performances in United’s gritty 2-1 win that saw the defence soak up a serious amount of pressure for the last 30 minutes after Wayne Rooney‘s red card.

During the pre-season Van Gaal criticised Shaw’s fitness so will be very pleased to have seen his progress after coming back from injury: “Luke Shaw was always injured but now I could play with him for 90 minutes,” Van Gaal said.

“He had a little cramp and it was amazing he lasted 90 minutes. Also, Paddy McNair played a very good match and I’m very pleased for him that we won.”

Shaw was very happy with how his debut went and hailed Van Gaal as an inspiration for his improvement: “The injury was a bit of setback but I’ve worked hard in the last weeks and had some talks [with the boss].

“He’s been a great inspiration to me and hopefully I can carry that on. For him to say I’m an example at a massive club like this is something to be really happy about.

“The aim is to win the next three games and carry on producing good performances and getting the points.”
