Potential Manchester United formation vs Everton: 4-4-2, no Herrera/Rooney but Fletcher starts

by Sam Peoples

The news that Ander Herrera has suffered a fractured rib injury is a real blow to Manchester United as the Spaniard made himself an essential player since returning from an ankle injury in September.

In his absence, United are left with very little options due to Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini also being injured.

We think Darren Fletcher is most likely to step into Herrera’s role. Louis van Gaal chose him as vice captain so expect him to play at points this season.

Andreas Pereira could potentially make a debut but in a central midfield pairing alongside Angel di Maria, it would give United little to no defensive presence.

Fletcher and Blind could technically switch positions but Van Gaal doesn’t like too many left footed players occupying the same area, meaning Fletcher could play a more advanced role.

What do you think of this formation? Who should replace Ander Herrera in the starting XI?
