David de Gea has been the talk of the town after a man of the match performance for Manchester United at the weekend.
His goalkeeping heroics secured United’s victory and the media has rightfully lavished praise on the Spaniard but his week could potentially get even better if Vicente Del Bosque feels now is the time for him to make his full Spain debut.
Iker Casillas is no longer the guaranteed No.1 first choice any more and if Del Bosque was waiting for the right time to give De Gea his full debut, he could do far worse than choosing to do so after arguably his finest performance in a United shirt.
Speaking recently about his fallout with Jose Mourinho, Casillas explained the Spanish public opinion towards him after Spain’s terrible World Cup performance which shows how much he has fallen from grace after being so dependable previously.
“In this country, which has thousands of positive things, there are also bad things,” Casillas said.
“And among those bad things is envy. It is true that a few months ago it was all terrible, and I was to blame for everything — the first problem. Everyone wanted to get rid of me because I had the plague.”
It is a case of when and not if De Gea will become Spain’s No.1 goalkeeper, so it all depends on when Del Bosque is prepared to follow Mourinho’s example and drop Casillas. Hopefully that time is now because De Gea deserves his chance.
