Nick Powell scores first Leicester City goal but loan spell is disappointing so far

Nick Powell scored his first Leicester City goal this afternoon in their 3-2 win over Aston Villa in a friendly.

The 20-year-old got on the end of a cross from Matty James to head home at the back post to give Leicester the lead after just three minutes.

It’s good for Powell to get off the goalscoring mark but even more so that he actually played some minutes with Leicester’s senior team, albeit in a friendly.

Since joining on loan, Powell has had to settle for appearances with Leicester’s Under-21s side and is set to make his debut in the Premier League, which is a worrying start for him.

The logic behind Powell securing a loan move away from United was to increase his chances of getting regular game time in the Premier League but so far it has been quite the opposite.

If this is a trend that continues across the whole season like it did for Angelo Henriquez when he joined Wigan Athletic on loan, Powell would certainly have been better off joining a Championship side on loan like he did for Wigan last year.

Powell has bags of potential and it’s a real shame that he isn’t following in the footsteps of so many other youngsters in getting an opportunity under Louis van Gaal this year but at 20, he still has plenty of time left to make his breakthrough.

However, in the short term Powell needs to play regular senior football so it would be a real shame if he found himself stuck with Leicester’s Under-21s for the duration of his loan spell.
