Spain fans vote David de Gea should be No.1 goalkeeper instead of Iker Casillas

Spanish newspaper MARCA has held a vote asking fans whether they would prefer David de Gea or Iker Casillas as Spain’s No.1 goalkeeper and a massive 81.7% voted in favour of De Gea.

At the time of writing, De Gea received 19,559 (81.7%) of the votes in comparison to 18.3% (4,300) who voted for current No.1 Casillas, which is a staggering majority in the Manchester United goalkeeper’s favour given how important Casillas has been to Spain over the years.

Casillas captained the side for 2008 and 2012 European Championships as well as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where Spain also came out on top but he is now just a shadow of his former self.

His mistakes last night against Slovakia cost Spain another embarrassing defeat which puts further pressure on Del Bosque to deliver the right results which he is currently not doing.

Many see it as a matter of time before De Gea takes over from Casillas but with the veteran in such poor form, now is as good a time as any to pass the baton to De Gea who richly deserves the opportunity.
