David de Gea’s transformation at Manchester United deservedly earned him Spain debut

It’s safe to say David de Gea didn’t enjoy the strongest of starts to life as a Manchester United player.

The sheer physicality of the Premier League was too much for De Gea and he lacked the presence any goalkeeper needs to be successful in England. He almost looked scared any time a cross was sent into the box but that’s now a thing of the past.

Three years on, De Gea is no longer the unassuming boy United signed from Atletico Madrid, he holds an altogether different stature nowadays.

Having increased his weight from 70kg to 81kg through hard work on a tough program at United, De Gea isn’t afraid of throwing himself around to command his six-yard box.

On his full Spain debut, that shone through and on the rare occasions Luxembourg attacked, he confidently batted them away.

De Gea’s performance against Everton last weekend was probably his best in a United shirt and after a slow start to the season, it was a timely reminder just how good a goalkeeper he is.

Every great team needs a great goalkeeper and in De Gea, United have a 23-year-old who is already one of the best in the world.
