West Brom 2-2 Manchester United: Fellaini and Blind score first United goals after mixed team performance

by Sam Peoples

A very poor first half from Manchester United. Everybody expected a fast start from United tonight but it could not have gone any different.

West Brom had 87% possession in the first five minutes and it set the tone for the first half. United offered very little going forward and were uncomfortable every time West Brom pushed forward.

Given how prolific United had been in attack against West Ham and Everton in the last two games, it was a stark contrast.

A very different second half from Manchester United. United really are a strange team to watch this year. Every game is Jekyll and Hyde, part genius part madman.

In the past couple of games it has been a strong start followed by a slow finish but it was the opposite against West Brom. After a poor first half United turned the screw and were a different beast altogether in the second, for 15 minutes.

Following the equaliser United reverted to their first-half self and succumbed to a West Brom side who were there for the taking, until the last five minutes.

Daley Blind‘s precision equaliser spurred United back into life and if there were a couple more minutes on the clock, you feel that United would have bagged the winner.

Pedestrian players. It would be unfair to point out poor individual performances tonight because on the whole, United as a collective were bad.

Marcos Rojo was uncomfortable at centre-back, Luke Shaw was caught in no man’s land far too often, Robin van Persie was pedestrian and Ander Herrera was clearly not 100% fit.

United went into the break off the back of two confidence boosting performances and although coming back for a draw isn’t the worst result, Louis van Gaal will consider it two points dropped.

Goals from midfield. Two goals from central midfielders in one game is almost too much to handle, especially when it is Blind and Fellaini scoring their first ever goals for the club.

Chelsea would tear United apart if they played like that. Something has to click between now and Sunday because United were so defensively open it was worrying. Up against the attacking threat of Chelsea, it wouldn’t be pretty.
