Ander Herrera’s rib injury could force him out of Chelsea game

Ander Herrera may be forced to miss Manchester United’s game against Chelsea on Sunday after aggravating his rib injury, The Independent reports.

The 25-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the starting XI against West Brom yesterday after United’s medical staff passed him fit for the game.

As it turned out, Herrera was certainly not fully match fit and may well have succumbed to the risks of coming back from an injury too early.

At this stage, there is no official confirmation from United and there isn’t likely to be any word from Louis van Gaal until his pre-match press conference on Friday but there are going to be some real question marks about whether Herrera should play even if available.

Against West Brom, it was abundantly obvious that Herrera wasn’t 100% match fit and he was rightly hooked off at half-time. Van Gaal took a risk by starting Herrera and, given how little influence he had on the game prior to being taken off, it was a bad decision on his part.

There is now an inherent risk that Van Gaal could do exactly the same thing and bring him back for the Chelsea game and cause more damage.

With Chelsea boasting the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic in their midfield, United need to be at full strength in order to compete and Herrera is a major part of that, so fans are hoping he can make a genuine recovery in time for Sunday.
